Physicians CMA President Elect Climate Change Forum

We see this as THE most important thing you can do to show your support for CMA making climate an organizational priority THIS YEAR. Please join us and invite your CMA friends and colleagues.

About this event

Climate change is a health emergency, but what is our professional duty as physicians? Join other California Medical Association physicians to discuss CMA's opportunity to lead.

Date: Friday, Sept 17, 2021
Time : 12:30-1:30 PDT

Our climate is changing. Across California climate change is multiplying health risks: more frequent and severe heat waves, worsening droughts and megafires in a fire season that is getting longer every year, choking air pollution from warmer temperatures, and allergies that don't stop.

International leaders across the world have identified the climate crisis as the public health crisis of our lifetimes, yet few among us understand the role of physicians in bringing an end to the climate crisis. Physicians are among the most trusted professionals in our communities and we have a critical role in catalyzing the climate movement to fulfill our CMA mission of “promoting the science and art of medicine, the care and well-being of patients, the protection of the public health, the betterment of the medical profession, and to achieve health equity and justice.”

Join us for this historic conversation with the CMA president-elect candidates as we discuss the emergent professional duty of the physicians of CMA to lead for urgent and equitable climate action across our great state.

CMA's political influence must be a force for catalyzing urgently needed bold climate policies in California that will benefit health immediately and safeguard the health of our young loved ones in the decades ahead.

We must come together to face this existential challenge, and this conversation is the beginning.

Don Berwick, MD, MPP, the former administrator of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and co-founder of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement will share special pre-recorded Opening Remarks on the leadership role he sees for physicians in the climate health emergency.

This event is not an official CMA event. This is being organized by a grassroots coalition of CMA member physicians and medical students who want to develop physician leadership to bring an end to the climate crisis. This is an event exclusively for CMA members- and all CMA members are invited to attend.

This event will be moderated by Russyan Mark Mabeza, MD/MPH candidate from UCLA, member of the CMA Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and proud member of the CMA Medical Student Section.

Candidate forum co-sponsors include:

  • The CMA Medical Student Section
  • The Young Physicians Section
  • The Fresno Madera Medical Society
  • The Humboldt-Del Norte County Medical Society

We are honored that all four CMA President-elect Candidates for October 2021 will be in attendance (in no particular order):

  • Dr. C. Freeman (LA)
  • Dr. Donaldo Hernandez (Santa Cruz)
  • Dr. Catherine Gutfreund (Santa Rosa)
  • Dr. Ramin Manshadi (Davis area)

Please note: this event will NOT be recorded.
